For most first visits, stay in Drumnadrochit: Urquhart Castle is 6 minutes by car and the Inverness coaches stop in the village. Pick Inverness for trains and evenings out, Fort Augustus for the canal locks, and Foyers only if you want quiet, because it is 45 minutes from the castle by road.
For a first visit, stay in Drumnadrochit. Urquhart Castle is 6 minutes away by car, The Loch Ness Experience is in the village, and the Citylink coaches from Inverness stop on the green. Choose Inverness instead if you arrive by train or want restaurants and evenings out; it is about 25 minutes away. Choose Fort Augustus for the canal locks at the south end. Stay at Foyers only if you want quiet: with no bridge or ferry, it is 45 minutes from the castle by road.
That is the short answer. The longer one depends on whether you have a car and what you came for.
Which area suits whom
Loch Ness is about 23 miles long and the A82 runs along its north-west shore, through every place most visitors want to see: Inverness, Drumnadrochit, Urquhart Castle, Invermoriston and Fort Augustus. The south-east shore, with Dores and Foyers, has quieter roads and no direct link across. That split decides most stays. The Loch Ness map shows it.

Drumnadrochit
The village has the widest choice on the loch: the Loch Ness Inn in Lewiston (open year-round, about 30 minutes’ walk from the castle), the Loch Ness Drumnadrochit Hotel and the 50-room Loch Ness Lodge Hotel by the green, B&Bs such as Morlea, a backpackers’ hostel and a campsite. Our Drumnadrochit hotels guide compares each one with walking times to the castle.
Hotels and hostels around the loch
Loch Ness Clansman Hotel (Brackla, north shore)
The Clansman sits right on the water at Brackla, about 6 km north-east of Drumnadrochit, and calls itself “the only hotel on the banks of Loch Ness”, with direct shore access. Jacobite’s Clansman Harbour cruises leave from beside it, so if your trip is built round a boat, this is the hotel. The cheapest of those cruises, a 50-minute round trip to Urquhart Castle, is the one most reviewed on GetYourGuide. Citylink’s 917 stops outside. The hotel does not publish its season or its parking, and Jacobite says the harbour car park is free but limited in peak season. The hotel offered 10% off direct bookings with the code “Loch Ness Club” in October 2026. Book on the official site or Booking.com.
Lochside Hostel (Alltsigh, between Drumnadrochit and Invermoriston)
Run by MacBackpackers, this hostel is at Alltsigh on the A82, about 12 km south-west of Drumnadrochit, with the Great Glen Way passing the door. It takes over-16s only and says it is not suitable for families. Citylink’s 919 and 917 both stop at the hostel, which makes it one of the few car-free options outside the villages. Its site showed “Bookings for 2026 now open” in October; winter opening is not stated. Stays of three nights or more were 15% off, except in August. See the official site or Booking.com.
Morag’s Lodge (Fort Augustus)
A Hostelling Scotland affiliate on Bunoich Brae, open all year, with private, family and en-suite rooms, dogs in private rooms for a charge and free parking nearby or on site. Reception runs 8.30am to 7pm. The 919 stops at Fort Augustus Tourist Information, about 34 minutes from Drumnadrochit. It suits budget travellers, families and canal walkers. Book through Hostelling Scotland or Booking.com.
The Lovat (Fort Augustus)
The splurge at the south end of the loch. The Lovat has the Station Road restaurant and the Waypoint Bar, and its site carries 2026 AA rosette and Michelin logos. Its Booking.com page was closed in October 2026, so book on the official site. Drumnadrochit is about 27 minutes by car.
Foyers Lodge (south shore)
Six rooms and a private suite on General Wade’s Military Road at Foyers, with Michelin badges from 2024 to 2026 on its site, free parking and a two-night minimum stay. It is the place for a quiet couple’s break by the Falls of Foyers, not for castle-hopping: Drumnadrochit is about 45 minutes by road. Season and prices are not published. See the official site or Booking.com.
Inverness Youth Hostel
On Victoria Drive, open all year, with free parking and reception from 7 to 10am and 4 to 11pm. Hostelling Scotland describes it as close to the railway station, and the 919, 917 and 17 to Drumnadrochit all leave from Inverness bus station. The cheapest car-free base for the whole area. Book through Hostelling Scotland or Booking.com.
Ness Walk (Inverness)
A hotel at 12 Ness Walk in the city centre, for anyone who wants Inverness’s restaurants and a comfortable room after a day at the loch. We have not checked its season or parking; see Booking.com. More on the city is in things to do in Inverness.
The Steading Highland Glen Lodge (Glen Urquhart)
Formerly The Steading Country Inn, 6 miles from Drumnadrochit on the A831 up Glen Urquhart, with free parking and a pub that opens from 5pm. Drivers heading for Glen Affric or Corrimony Cairn will find it quieter than anywhere on the A82. Season and prices are not published. See the official site or Booking.com.

Checked October 2026 on each site’s own pages: Loch Ness Bay Camping, Loch Ness Shores, Cannich. The Drumnadrochit and Cannich price pages do not state the year.
Loch Ness Shores has direct access to the loch shore and takes motorhomes. Cannich’s pods are the nearest thing to glamping we could verify. Wild sleeping in car parks is a poor plan here: none of the Highland Council’s overnight motorhome car parks is on Loch Ness.
Places we left out
The Glenmoriston Arms in Invermoriston says it is closed for refurbishment, with no reopening date. The Benleva Hotel in Drumnadrochit no longer has a working website and CAMRA lists the pub as closed long term. We found no accommodation in Dores itself.
Our pick for each kind of visitor
- First visit, with or without a car: Drumnadrochit. Six minutes to the castle and on the coach route.
- Arriving by train: Inverness Youth Hostel, then the 919 to the village and the castle.
- Cruise first: the Loch Ness Clansman Hotel, beside Clansman Harbour.
- Great Glen Way walkers: Lochside Hostel (over-16s) or Morag’s Lodge.
- A special night: The Lovat in Fort Augustus, or Foyers Lodge for quiet.
- Campervans: Loch Ness Bay Camping for the castle, Loch Ness Shores for the south shore.
- Glen Affric: Cannich, or the Steading in Glen Urquhart.
