Loch Ness cruises leave from four places: Urquhart Bay in Drumnadrochit, Clansman Harbour 4.4 miles north, Dochgarroch Lock near Inverness, and Fort Augustus at the south end. Most trips last 50 minutes to 2 hours and show Urquhart Castle from the water. Only a few, such as Jacobite's cruise-and-castle trips, let you land.
A Loch Ness cruise leaves from one of four places: Urquhart Bay in Drumnadrochit, Clansman Harbour a few miles north, Dochgarroch Lock near Inverness, or Fort Augustus at the south end of the loch. Most trips take 50 minutes to 2 hours and show you Urquhart Castle from the water. If you want to walk round the castle too, book a cruise-and-castle trip; a plain cruise does not land.

Cruises from Drumnadrochit: Urquhart Bay
Two small boats work from the village, so if you are staying here you can do without a car.
Loch Ness Cruises sails the Nessie Hunter from Urquhart Bay harbour, with a ticket office near the A82 and A831 junction next to Nessieland. Trips run hourly and carry a maximum of 12 passengers. The operator describes live commentary from local skippers, a heated cabin with large windows and a colour sonar. Reviews on its site mention parking at Nessieland and a minibus to a private jetty. Its prices and season were not shown online when this was checked, so confirm them on lochness-cruises.com.
The Loch Ness Experience runs the Deepscan Cruise: an hour on the research boat Deepscan, named after the 1987 sonar sweep of the loch, with sonar on board and no more than 12 guests. It passes Urquhart Castle. In 2026 it ran from 3 April to 1 November, hourly from 10am to 5pm, and meets on the Loch Ness Experience site. Booking is on lochness.com.
Neither boat is sold on GetYourGuide.
Clansman Harbour
Clansman Harbour is Jacobite’s pier at the Clansman Hotel, on the A82 at Brackla, about 4.4 miles north of Drumnadrochit and 9 miles from Inverness. Jacobite says you will need a car or taxi to get there. Parking at the hotel is free but fills up in peak season, so the operator asks you to arrive 45 minutes early; the overflow car park is about a 15-minute walk over rough ground.
Two trips leave from here. Inspiration is a 50-minute cruise out to the castle and back. Freedom is two hours: an hour on the boat and an hour at Urquhart Castle.
For most drivers staying near the village, the Urquhart Castle Round-Trip Cruise from Clansman Harbour is the simplest boat trip to book online: 50 minutes, from $32 on GetYourGuide (checked October 2026), rated 4.4 from 3,590 reviews. The listing says the boat “may dock briefly at the castle”, with no chance to get off. There are 26 steps down to the boat, and dogs are allowed. Jacobite says its Clansman Harbour cruises are not suitable for wheelchair users, so step-free visitors should look at Dochgarroch.
Dochgarroch Lock and Inverness
Dochgarroch Lock is on the Caledonian Canal, 4 miles out of Inverness on the A82 and about 10 miles from Drumnadrochit. Jacobite runs two cruises from here. Enchantment (50 minutes) covers the canal and the loch past Bona Lighthouse and Aldourie Castle. Contemplation (two hours) adds views of Urquhart Castle.
GetYourGuide sells the two-hour trip from Dochgarroch as the Loch Ness and Caledonian Canal 2-Hour Cruise, from $39, rated 4.7 from 2,383 reviews. The listing says it sails to Urquhart Castle and back, for views only. Parking at the lock is free, and Jacobite says its Dochgarroch cruises suit wheelchair users. More on the canal is in the Caledonian Canal guide.
Without a car, the easiest choice starts at Inverness bus station. Jacobite’s Temptation trip takes a coach to Dochgarroch Lock, cruises the loch and gives you an hour at Urquhart Castle, 3.5 hours in all. The GetYourGuide trip of the same shape, From Inverness: Loch Ness Cruise and Urquhart Castle, includes castle entry and costs from $75 (4.7 from 2,617 reviews).
Fort Augustus
Cruise Loch Ness has sailed from Fort Augustus since 1968, from Canalside on the Caledonian Canal. It is about 19 miles from Drumnadrochit, roughly half an hour by road. Park in the main village car park (postcode PH32 4DD, next to the petrol station), a five-minute walk from the boats.
The Daily Discovery is a 50-minute scenic cruise past Cherry Island, the loch’s only island, with views of Fort Augustus Abbey and a live sonar feed. It runs all year: several sailings a day from April to October, then 13:00 and 14:00 from November to March. Dogs are welcome if you mention them when booking.
For a RIB ride, Loch Ness Quest is the operator’s high-speed trip, 60 or 90 minutes, April to October. The 90-minute version goes “all the way to the magnificent Urquhart Castle and back” with stops, though the operator does not say you land. Riders must be at least 110 cm tall, the boats are not for pregnant women or people with mobility problems, and dogs are not allowed. Speedboat prices differed between pages on the operator’s site in October 2026, so check them on cruiselochness.com. The village itself is covered in the Fort Augustus guide.

Which Loch Ness cruise lands at Urquhart Castle?
Only a few. Jacobite’s Freedom (from Clansman Harbour) and Temptation (coach from Inverness) both include an hour’s castle visit, and the GetYourGuide cruise and castle trip from Inverness lists entry as included. Some full-day tours do the same: the $60 Loch Ness, Castle and Outlander tour and Rabbie’s small-group day both pair a cruise with castle entry, as the Loch Ness tours guide sets out. Every other trip on this page shows you the castle from the water.
Jacobite notes that landing at the castle is not possible for wheelchair users or people with limited mobility. In summer, castle tickets often sell out online, and none are sold at the gate once they do, so a trip with entry included saves a separate booking. If you would rather drive, see Urquhart Castle parking.
Which one to choose
Staying in Drumnadrochit without a car: walk to Urquhart Bay. Driving and short on time: the 50-minute Clansman cruise. Based in Inverness without a car: the coach, cruise and castle half day. Using a wheelchair: Dochgarroch, where Jacobite says its cruises suit wheelchair users. Coming in winter: Jacobite or the Fort Augustus Daily Discovery. For Jacobite’s pier details, see the Jacobite cruises guide, and for every bookable trip, the full tour list.
