The best Loch Ness tours and day trips

For most people the best Loch Ness tour is the 3.5-hour cruise and Urquhart Castle trip from Inverness, from $75 on GetYourGuide with castle entry included. A $60 full day adds Culloden. Day trips from Edinburgh or Glasgow take 11.5 to 12.5 hours and often stop at Fort Augustus instead of the castle.

The best Loch Ness tour for most people is the half-day cruise and Urquhart Castle trip from Inverness. It takes 3.5 hours, includes the castle ticket and costs from $75 on GetYourGuide (checked October 2026). If you are coming from Edinburgh or Glasgow, plan on a 12-hour coach day, and check whether the castle is included, because on most of those tours it is not.

The table below compares the seven picks plus one budget option. Every price is the “from” price GetYourGuide showed in US dollars in October 2026. For every tour sold on GetYourGuide, see the full tour list.

How we picked

Each label follows from the listing data, not from a ride on the tour. We looked at four things: what the base price includes (castle ticket, cruise or both), where the tour starts, the price, and the rating with the number of reviews behind it. “Best on a budget” is the cheapest tour that includes both a cruise and castle entry. “Most reviewed” is the tour with the most reviews of all 24 we track. “Best from Edinburgh” and “Best from Glasgow” pick from tours that leave those cities. A label never claims a stop the listing does not name.

Loch Ness tours from Inverness

Inverness is the easy base. Drumnadrochit and the castle are about 25 minutes down the A82, so a tour from the city spends most of its time at the loch rather than on the road.

Best overall. The 3.5-hour Loch Ness Cruise and Urquhart Castle trip leaves Inverness bus station by coach, puts you on a Jacobite cruise boat first, then gives you an hour inside the castle with the ticket included. It is rated 4.7 from 2,617 reviews. It suits a first visit and leaves the afternoon or morning free. The listing does not name the pier the cruise leaves from.

Best on a budget. The Loch Ness Cruise, Castle, and Outlander Tour costs from $60 and runs nine hours. You get a 30-minute cruise to the castle and 70 minutes in the ruins, ticket included. After that it heads to Beauly, an optional stop at the Glen Ord distillery, Culloden Battlefield and the Clava Cairns. It is the cheapest tour on this page with both the cruise and the castle in the base price, and it is rated 4.7 from 851 reviews.

Best small-group day. Rabbie’s seven-hour small-group tour goes right round the loch by minibus: Dores, Foyers, Fort Augustus and Invermoriston, then Urquhart Castle (entry included) and an hour’s Jacobite cruise. At $109 it is the dearest of the three, and the best rated at 4.8 from 649 reviews.

The Loch Ness and the Highlands Day Trip from Timberbush (from $73, 4.8 from 773 reviews) covers similar ground by coach in nine hours, with stops at the castle, Fort Augustus, Foyers and Dores. The castle ticket and the one-hour cruise cost extra, so add those before you compare it with the $60 tour.

More day trips that start in the city, including Skye and the Glenfinnan Viaduct, are on the Loch Ness tours from Inverness page.

Loch Ness tour from Edinburgh

Loch Ness is about four hours’ drive from Edinburgh, so every Edinburgh day trip is long: 12.5 hours for both picks below. Both go via Glencoe. Neither stops at Urquhart Castle as standard.

Most reviewed. Timberbush’s Loch Ness, Glencoe & the Scottish Highlands Tour has 20,894 reviews, more than any other tour we track, with a 4.6 rating. Its Loch Ness stop is at a hotel by the loch, where the Old Coffin Road walk starts from the car park. Urquhart Castle with a 30-minute cruise is an optional paid add-on, and the tour comes home via Pitlochry. From $77.

Best from Edinburgh. The Hairy Coo’s tour is cheaper (from $59) and rated a little higher (4.7 from 12,404 reviews). It comes in three versions. The standard one stops at Fort Augustus, at the south end of the loch. The “Castle & Cruise” version, which does not run every day, adds an optional cruise and castle visit paid on the day. Pick that version if the castle matters to you.

If you would rather go under your own steam and stay a night, the Edinburgh to Loch Ness guide covers the train and the drive.

Loch Ness tour from Glasgow

Both Glasgow day trips run 11.5 hours and both stop at Fort Augustus, not at Urquhart Castle.

Best from Glasgow. Timberbush’s From Glasgow tour (from $83, 4.6 from 2,087 reviews) drives past Loch Lomond, Glencoe and Fort William to Fort Augustus, where an hour’s cruise is optional. The other option, Highland Experience Tours’ Glasgow day (from $80, 4.8 from 103 reviews), gives you two hours in Fort Augustus with an optional cruise, plus Luss and a Highland cow stop. It is rated higher but on far fewer reviews.

Just want a cruise?

If you have a car or are staying near the loch, you may not need a tour at all. The cheapest boat trip on GetYourGuide is the 50-minute Urquhart Castle Round-Trip Cruise from Clansman Harbour, about 4.4 miles north of Drumnadrochit, from $32 and rated 4.4 from 3,590 reviews. It sails out to the castle for photos from the water. The boat may dock briefly, but you cannot get off. There are 26 steps down to the boat, and dogs are allowed.

For every departure point, from Urquhart Bay in the village to Fort Augustus, see the Loch Ness cruise guide.

Do Loch Ness tours include Urquhart Castle?

Read this line of the listing first. Three of the Inverness tours above include the ticket: the half day, the $60 Outlander day and the small-group day. The Timberbush coach loop stops at the castle but sells entry separately. Both Edinburgh tours make the castle optional, and the Glasgow tours do not go there.

It matters in summer. Historic Environment Scotland says castle tickets often sell out, and once they sell out online there are none at the gate. A tour with entry included has its tickets booked. Going on your own, buy timed tickets first; prices and times are on the Urquhart Castle guide.

Doing it without a tour

From Inverness you can reach Drumnadrochit and the castle by bus: Scottish Citylink’s 919 and Stagecoach’s 17 both run from Inverness to the village. Routes and stops are on the Inverness to Drumnadrochit page. In the village, The Loch Ness Experience runs its own one-hour boat trip, and Loch Ness Cruises sails from Urquhart Bay. Going this way you plan the timings yourself, and the castle still needs booking in summer.

Questions people ask

What is the best Loch Ness tour?

For most visitors it is the 3.5-hour cruise and Urquhart Castle trip from Inverness, rated 4.7 from 2,617 reviews on GetYourGuide, from $75 with castle entry included. If you want a full day for less, the $60 Loch Ness, Castle and Outlander tour also includes the castle ticket and a short cruise, then adds Culloden and the Clava Cairns.

Can you do a day trip to Loch Ness from Edinburgh?

Yes, but it is a long day. Coach tours from Edinburgh run about 12.5 hours, because Loch Ness is roughly four hours' drive each way. Most go via Glencoe. The default stop is often Fort Augustus or a lochside hotel, and Urquhart Castle with a cruise is usually an optional paid extra, so read the listing before you book.

Do Loch Ness tours include Urquhart Castle entry?

Some do. On GetYourGuide in October 2026, the Inverness half day with a cruise, the $60 Outlander full day and the small-group day tour all include castle entry. The budget coach loop from Inverness stops at the castle but sells the ticket and the cruise as extras. Day trips from Edinburgh and Glasgow mostly treat the castle as an add-on.

How long is a Loch Ness tour from Glasgow?

About 11.5 hours. The two Glasgow day trips on GetYourGuide both run that long and both stop at Fort Augustus, at the south end of the loch, where a cruise is optional. The more-reviewed one goes past Loch Lomond, Glencoe and Fort William on the way north. Neither includes Urquhart Castle in the base price.

Do I need to book a Loch Ness tour in advance?

In summer it is wise. Urquhart Castle tickets often sell out online, and once they do there are no tickets at the gate, according to Historic Environment Scotland. A tour with entry included takes care of that. Group tours have fixed departure times, so booking ahead also fixes your seat on the coach and the boat.
